As we rejoice in the gift of this new day,

CONFESSION
Almighty God our heavenly Father
we have sinned against you
and against our neighbour
in thought word and deed,
through negligence, through weakness,
through our own deliberate fault.
We are truly sorry

For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ who died for us,

and grant that we may serve you in newness of life

Glory to God in the highest

Readings: First Reading: Acts 1:15-17, 21-26
In those days Peter stood up among the believers (together the crowd numbered about one hundred and twenty people) and said, ‘Friends, the scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit through David foretold concerning Judas, who became a guide for those who arrested Jesus— for he was numbered among us and was allotted his share in this ministry.’
So one of the men who have accompanied us throughout the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, beginning from the baptism of John until the day when he was taken up from us—one of these must become a witness with us to his resurrection.’ So they proposed two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was also known as Justus, and Matthias. Then they prayed and said, ‘Lord, you know everyone’s heart. Show us which one of these two you have chosen to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place.’ And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias; and he was added to the eleven apostles.
Gospel: John 17:6-19
‘I have made your name known to those whom you gave me from the world. They were yours, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything you have given me is from you; for the words that you gave to me I have given to them, and they have received them and know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me. I am asking on their behalf; I am not asking on behalf of the world, but on behalf of those whom you gave me, because they are yours. All mine are yours, and yours are mine; and I have been glorified in them. And now I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one, as we are one. While I was with them, I protected them in your name that you have given me. I guarded them, and not one of them was lost except the one destined to be lost, so that the scripture might be fulfilled. But now I am coming to you, and I speak these things in the world so that they may have my joy made complete in themselves. I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world. I am not asking you to take them out of the world, but I ask you to protect them from the evil one. They do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world. Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. As you have sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. And for their sakes I sanctify myself, so that they also may be sanctified in truth.

Reflection:
The reflection I wrote a couple of weeks ago the overriding phrase was this: – We are called to find ourselves abiding in the heart of our Lord and when we are all things are possible, Abiding in Christ’s heart, is to be in His presence. Last week we read about Jesus choosing His disciples “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you.” These are important ideas to remember as we pray about our Christian journey and the future direction of our team and mission community. Prayer that is the key, We read about this in our Gospel this morning. Jesus is praying for His disciples, for those who believe in Him. If you read the text carefully you will see that Jesus is making a distinction between believers and the world. Its not that Jesus doesn’t care about the world, John 3 :16 corrects that possible assumption. No Jesus is prayer, or interceding with the Father for us,” I am asking on their behalf; I am not asking on behalf of the world” But what is Jesus praying for? We read in the first few verses that we have been given to Jesus, that we believe He is from the Father, that He has the words of eternal life, that He speaks the truth, so for whom and for what is Jesus praying for? Well I believe He is praying for our protection in and from a world that well the text says hates us. That is difficult to comprehend isn’t it? Last week was all about friends and this week we learn that we could and can be hated for being Jesus’ disciples. And just in case you think Jesus was just talking about the 12 “I ask not only on behalf of these, but also on behalf of those who will believe in me through their word” (verse 20) It not an easy read today, and I struggle with this. Jesus says that like Him we do not belong to the world, we belong to Him. Given the state of the world at present I find that reassuring. Reassuring that we are, sanctified, blessed, consecrated, purified in the truth, for the Father’s word is truth. The word spoken back at the beginning of John’s Gospel returns, and as such we are reminded that Jesus is the way the truth and the life.
THE CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ,
his only Son our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried;
he descended to the dead.

to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church,
the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,

THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father in Heaven
hallowed be your name;
your kingdom come, your will be done,

as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power
and the glory are yours

May the Lord
