As we rejoice in the gift of this new day,

CONFESSION
Almighty God our heavenly Father
we have sinned against you
and against our neighbour

READINGS
First Reading: Genesis 9:8-17
Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him, ‘As for me, I am establishing my covenant with you and your descendants after you, and with every living creature that is with you, the birds, the domestic animals, and every animal of the earth with you, as many as came out of the ark. I establish my covenant with you, that never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of a flood, and never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.’ God said, ‘This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: I have set my bow in the clouds, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds, I will remember my covenant that is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh. When the bow is in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.’ God said to Noah, ‘This is the sign of the covenant that I have established between me and all flesh that is on the earth.’
Gospel: Mark 1:9-15
In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. And a voice came from heaven, ‘You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.’
And the Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. He was in the wilderness for forty days, tempted by Satan; and he was with the wild beasts; and the angels waited on him.
Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, and saying, ‘The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news.’

REFLECTION
There is a rhythm to the readings. The world had got so bad God decided to start again. Noah has survived and God states that he will have a new covenant with him and his descendants, as a sign of this covenant we have a rainbow. A reminder that no matter how bad things get there is still hope, because God still has hope for humanity. A reminder that God is with us. We have in our rainbow a promise, hope and reconciliation. Very strong themes that are played out in the life of Jesus, in the actions of the disciples, hopefully in our lives.
As Christians we see this promise fulfilled in Jesus. Mark chooses to concentrate firstly on Jesus’ baptism. Without knowing the story of Jesus’ baptism you might expect there to be a fanfare, thunder and lightning some thing out of this world. No, we get a dove, we are back to Noah and the dove returning with evidence that the flood is receding. A dove representing a change in the natural order. Not nature this time but lives, good news for some, bad news for many. If any one present had any doubts about Jesus then it stopped here, A voice from heaven, “you are my son the beloved, with you I am well pleased.” This isn’t to be missed, the identity of Jesus is confirmed.
But the spirit immediately drives Jesus out into the desert. The emphasis is one of loneliness, trouble, fear and it is in this environment that Jesus encounters the devil. In the wilderness of the desert Jesus is tempted, which is a theme in Lent with many people giving something up. In doing so joining Jesus on a journey of sacrifice, going through the desert to deny yourself. Yes, we might resist, question even disagree but at the end of the day we know in our heart the path we should be on. That there are no short cuts to salvation. Jesus’ ministry commenced after John had been arrested. John who prepared the way, made the paths straight, showed the right way to go, offered baptism for the redemption of sins, was arrested, condemned and put to death. This sacrifice was mirrored in Jesus death, where the church rulers choose wealth, power and control ahead of salvation.
Through this suffering, the message remains the same. That the time has been fulfilled, the kingdom of God has come near, repent and believe in the good news. No matter how bad things get, how similar to the time of Noah our world appears the good news of Jesus Christ stands out. The promise is still there like a rainbow in the dark.
THE CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried;

to judge the living and the dead.
